Student Growth Is Rooted In Strong Instructional Leadership
ABOUT
Sarah Gerrol attended Virginia Tech, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Education. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and an Ed Specialist degree in Educational Leadership, also from Virginia Tech. In addition to her years at Salem High School and Andrew Lewis Middle School, Sarah’s teaching experience includes eight years with Roanoke County Schools and five years with Virginia Western Community College. Sarah is currently teaching Intro to Architecture, Intro to Engineering, Technical Drawing, Robotics 1, Robotics 2, Engineering Drawing, Manufacturing and Architectural Drawing.
Sarah has held many leadership and service positions at SHS and ALMS including the Competition Robotics Team Coach, Junior Honor Association sponsor, SkillsUSA sponsor, Technology Club sponsor, and Technology Education Department Chair. She is also a member of the Salem High School Community Scholarship Night Planning Committee, Open Device Environment Exploration Committee, School-based Technology Committee, and Standards-Based Learning Exploration Committee.
In 2013 the Roanoke Chapter of the Air Force Association recognized Sarah with their Teacher of the Year Award for demonstrating excellence in the field of aerospace education, science, technology, engineering, or math. More recently, Sarah was recognized for teaching excellence by the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council by receiving their 2014 Outstanding Educator Award. In 2015, Sarah was also recognized as Salem High School's Teacher of the Year.
In addition to her contributions the students and staff at Salem High School and Andrew Lewis Middle School, Mrs. Gerrol has also made contributions to the division and the field of education. She has been involved with National Science Foundation Grants that engage students in higher order learning through researched practices. She is the Past President of Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association, Blue Ridge Region, the Past State Secretary of Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association, a Past member of the Virginia Technology Education State Conference Team, and a member of the International Technology Engineering Education Association (ITEEA) and Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association (VTEEA).
Beyond those involvements, Sarah has presented on the topics of Technological Literacy and Women in Technology Education at ITEEA Conferences in Kansas City and New Mexico. Not to mention her involvement with various STEM service camps and organizations in our immediate area. Some of Mrs. Gerrol’s proudest moments have occurred when her students have taken the knowledge and skills she has taught them and applied them in ways that benefit special needs students at SHS.
